The Honan Chapel is a beautiful place of prayer, worship and solitude. At the same time, the Chapel invites those who visit to appreciate and explore its unique architectural beauty and historical significance.

The Honan Chapel was formally consecrated in November 1916. Since then it has been the gathering point on University College Cork Campus for prayer and liturgy, weekday and Sunday Eucharist and ecumenical celebrations. University ‘fresher’ or postgraduate students, staff members and casual visitors come to the Honan to experience a special encounter with God.

Each year we welcome not only members of the University community, but also many visitors from near and far who come to Cork and to UCC and seek out the Chapel. They are drawn to the Honan as a place of solitude and prayer, and as a unique and iconic building globally recognised for its architecture, iconography and unique features.

“The chapel and its liturgical collection were produced during the late phase of the Irish Arts and Crafts movement (1894 – 1925). Both the building and furnishings were designed and produced as a single commission. This accounts for an overall unity of style and design and the rich interplay of Celto-Byzantine motifs.”

Beautiful Honan

The Chapel is situated centrally on campus – the austere beauty of its carved stonework offset by the Honan Square. Spiritually and physically, it is at the heart of the University and is a building recognised for its unique style, rich symbolism and imagery and decorative features.  Visitors are drawn to the Chapel’s magnificent ‘River of Life’ mosaic floor, embellished tabernacle and magnificent stained-glass windows.

We welcome you, your family or group to visit the Honan Chapel.
